Elective in Family Medicine at the Montana Family Medicine Residency

The Montana Family Medicine Residency is located in Billings, MT. We provide the experience and education to prepare our residents to practice in rural areas and offer a 2-4 week elective in Family Medicine. The residency is affiliated with the University of Washington in Seattle. The ambulatory care site of the Billings program is the Deering Family Medicine Center (FMC) at the Community Health Center, and the residents care for patients at both hospitals in Billings. You will need to provide your own local transportation.

Elective Experience:

The student elective provides an opportunity to work with our residents and faculty at the Deering FMC on one of our inpatient services. The student will function as a member of an integrated health care team of Family Medicine attendings, residents, and PharmD students. Under faculty supervision, the student will be assigned patients on the inpatient service and work with residents and faculty in the outpatient center. Conferences are offered four to five days a week at the residency or at the hospitals, and students are expected to attend all conferences.

Opportunities to see patients with the Community Health Center's outreach programs at homeless shelters, hospice, visiting nursing program, and the correctional center are available. An experience at nearby Crow Indian Reservation can be arranged.

A presentation on a clinical topic is a requirement of this rotation.
